The Dictionary of the Russian Language in Four Volumes [Slovar’ russkogo iazyka v chetyrekh tomakh] is the single most authoritative normative dictionary of the Russian literary language. It encompasses the core lexicon and phraseology of the language and prescribes standards of usage and conventional collocations. This dictionary is a picture of the present condition of the vocabulary of Contemporary Standard Russian. It also includes many of the words most commonly-used in literary, journalistic, and scholarly literature from the early nineteenth-century to the present. FEB-web makes available to users the fourth stereotype edition of the Dictionary, which contains over 80,000 entries. Each entry provides a definition, basic grammatical forms, and notes on style, as well as the standard stress of the word (pronunciations are not given in the Dictionary) and usage examples (excerpts from literary texts and common expressions). Etymologies are given for words of non-Russian origin. This electronic version of the Dictionary differs slightly from the original print edition. Rather than divide the Dictionary into volumes, this DSE presents the contents of the Dictionary as a single alphabetical list of head-words. The pagination of the print edition is not reproduced in the on-screen version of entries, though it does appear in the printer-friendly version of each entry. The DSE search tools allow users to search for individual words in the full text or to search by head-word as well as the phraseologisms included in the Dictionary’s entries. All the materials in the Dictionary beyond the vocabulary section are linked to the descriptions of each individual volume. The Dictionary of the Russian Language DSE uses the Library of Congress system for transliteration. Entry titles are alphabetized in the DSE hierarchy as if they were written in Cyrillic, but using the search function to search by title will give results alphabetized as if they were in English.
